St. Michaels,
Maryland,
United States
Originally opened in 1969, St. Michaels Church sits between Baltimore and Washington, in the historic town of St. Michaels, Maryland.
Founded in the seventeenth century, St. Michaels is a charming harbor community with a maritime museum and fine dining, and a desirable vacation spot, especially for many retirees. And, because of the influx of people, there became a desire for religious options.
As Catholicism slowly grew in St. Michaels, mass was initially held in the town Firehouse. But, by 1965, membership had grown and required a dedicated chapel. And, after years of fundraising, ground officially broke in 1968, with the doors opening and church being dedicated in 1969.
Now, more than 50 years later, this sacred space has received a much-deserved sanctuary renovation including the installation of new marble floors, with a matching alter, ambo, and tabernacle, as well as updated finishes and lighting. St. Jude Liturgical Arts Studio, together with Traxon e:cue, was able to use cove light to highlight the architectural lines of the building, enhance the vaulted dome ceiling and draw attention to the crucifix at the heart of the sanctuary.
St. Michaels Church now “stands as a monument to the vision and enduring determination of a small group of people who made their dream a reality”1 and “offers a reverend, light-filled setting worthy of the liturgy it hosts”2 on a year-round basis.
