M+

Hong Kong,

China

Asia’s first world-class museum.

Traxon e:cue Connected Solution Lights up the M+ building, Asia’s first world-class museum of contemporary visual culture and a new addition to the global art and culture. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron in partnership with TFP Farrells and Arup, the horizontal podium and the vertical tower fuse into a single entity in the shape of an upside-down T. The M+ building boasts 17,000 square metres of exhibition spaces, a diverse set ranging from galleries, cinema houses, learning hub, roof garden, research center, office and restaurant etc.

It is not just a museum. It is a place for everyone. Even from afar, visitors could encounter the energizing vibe produced by the M+ facade. Clad with glazed terracotta tubes with a deep green semi-reflective finish, the building exterior mirrors the surrounding landscape and weather conditions during daytime. Upon nightfall, it imbues the skyline with glorious colors.

The M+ building’s south facade, facing the harbour, conceals an LED lighting system in the sun-shading louvers. When activated, the entire system becomes an oversized display screen for preset or specifically designed works of art, establishing the M+ building as part of the Victoria Harbour nightscape.

As a provider of the M+ building construction, OSRAM Traxon e:cue customized a connected LED media solution to build one of the world’s largest (66x110m), most engaging multimedia screens. The e:cue Lighting Control Engine 3 FX, paired with an array of Butler Pro, DMX and e:pix controllers, builds  an intelligent control system, connecting 5,682 units of Traxon customized Hybrid Media Tube RGB embedded in the façade. To align with the pattern of the ribbed tiles, the solution utilizes both high/low power LEDs to ensure visibility from afar and limit glare to the nearest.

The e:cue control system enables functionalities including lighting automation, one-touch management, and real-time failure detection and report, improving operation efficiency and reducing energy waste. The orchestra of lights puts on a glamourous show related to the museum or a thematic event, making a unique contribution to the city’s vibrant night life, which can be seen from the West Kowloon waterfront promenade and Hong Kong Island.

The M+ building is an architecture landmark, Asia’s art benchmark, and above all, an all-purpose platform open to everyone, allowing for exchange and encounter of people and culture. OSRAM Traxon e:cue is proud to be part of this world-class project and help the M+ building shine a bit brighter with our solution.
